What it is
School consultation connects the work we do at home with what happens at school. A BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst) works with teachers, aides and other school staff to share strategies that help a student learn, join in and feel safe.
When home and school use the same tools, students learn faster and feel less confused.
Who it’s for
School consultation is for students we already support who need extra help at school. It can help when a student:
- Has a hard time following classroom routines
- Gets upset during changes, like moving between classes
- Struggles to join group work or recess
- Needs support to communicate needs to teachers
- Has an IEP or 504 plan and the team wants new ideas
What sessions look like
First, we talk with you about what is happening at school. Then, with your written permission, our BCBA contacts the school team. We may observe the student in class, talk with the teacher and look at what already helps.
After that, we share simple, practical ideas that fit a busy classroom. We check in to see how things are going and adjust together. We always keep you in the loop.
Example goals
- Follow a visual schedule to move through the school day
- Ask a teacher for help or a break using words or a card
- Join a small group activity for a few minutes
- Line up and switch activities with fewer reminders
- Play a structured game with classmates at recess
Where it happens
Most consultation happens at school, during the parts of the day that are hardest. Some meetings with teachers can happen by video call to save time.
Paying for it
Coverage for school consultation depends on your funding source. Some plans cover it as part of ABA services, and private pay is also available. We’ll check your options for free and explain any costs before we start.
Not sure what your plan covers? That’s okay. Call us or fill out our short form, and we’ll walk you through your options step by step.
